How to Install Electronic House Locks

Electronic locks, also known as keyless locks are more convenient and secure than standard locks. Homeowners having such locks on their front doors do not worry about losing the keys. They also do not lose sleep thinking that someone may copy or duplicate their keys. Rather having an electronic house lock have the peace of mind that his front doors are secured to an extent. For this reason, you are missing a lot if you are yet to upgrade your locks.

However, installing a keyless lock is not as strenuous as you may think. Anyone with the right tools and who can follow the procedure we described in this article can remove the old lock and install an electronic lock.

Read through this guide to learn the step-by-step process of installing an electronic lock on your doors.

Tools for this DIY Procedure

  • Screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Hand gloves for safety

First Step

Remove the Deadbolt or Old Lock

The old lock must give way before installing the electronic lock. Use the screwdriver to unscrew the standard lock or deadlock. Then remove all the components of the lock. Remember to put on your hand gloves while doing this.

If you intend to remove an old lock, you first remove the handles by unscrewing and pulling them from both sides. After which, you will unscrew the knob’s latch plate from the side of the door.

Take Correct Measurements

The electronic door lock must correctly fit in. So you must take the correct measurements to ensure a successful installation. Firstly, you have to measure out the bore hole diameter. This may be to the nearest ? inch. Kindly note that the measurements must correspond to the proposed electronic lock and you should know the thickness of the door.

Secondly, get the measurement of the backset. It is an area from the edge of the door to the center of the main borehole. The other important detail is to get the measurement of the edge bore hole diameter. After taking all the necessary measurements, you have to do a thorough comparison with the electronic door lock you intend to install.

Second Step

Install the Electronic Door Lock

After removing the old lock, the next step is to install the Set Plate of the electronic lock. You should screw the bolt plate to the door and insert the latch.

Then mount the exterior face of the lock by lining it with the bore hole. To do this, you have to hold the face parallel to the door, pin it and ensure that code slides under the latch. Hold it firmly and line up the center hole of the latch with the metal post. In the end, you have to engage the latch of the deadbolt.

Mount the Door Lock Keypad

Get the electronic lock keypad and hold it upright to slide the battery cable over the top. Then slot it and tighten using your screwdriver.

Finally, Program Your New Lock

With the above procedure, you can successfully install your electronic house. However, the process is not yet complete until you program the new lock. Most keypad locks come with a preset code that you’ll need to enter before creating a custom one. For keyless locks controlled by a smartphone, you will get all the instructions from the manufacturers’ manual.
